THE ROLE OF AI IN SPREADING DISINFORMATION

INTRODUCTION:

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the most powerful technologies in today’s world. It can be used to  write like a human, draw like an artist, and even talk like a real person. AI is seen  as a great invention that will change the world in positive ways but AI also has a dark side. One of the most worrying things is that it used in  spreading disinformation. Disinformation means false information that is spread on purpose to mislead or confuse  people ,unlike misinformation which may be false but shared by mistake. disinformation is intentional and harmful. For example, it can be used to change the outcomes of elections, damage  the image of a country, or create fear among people. AI makes this problem worse because it is used to create lies  faster, make them look real  and spread them more widely and quickly.

HOW AI SPREADS DISINFORMATION:

One of the dangerous examples of AI-driven disinformation is deepfakes. These are videos or audios created by AI to make it look like a someone is saying or doing something they never did.For example ;During the Russia-Ukraine war, a deepfake video showed President Zelensky telling his soldiers to surrender. Even though it was fake but it created confusion and fear. Another issue is the use of AI to write fake news articles. In the past, propaganda required time and effort, but now AI can create hundreds of professional-looking articles in minutes. According to research from MIT  false news spreads six times faster on Twitter (now X) than the truth. So this  means AI has made disinformation far more powerful.

Social media platforms like Facebook, TikTok and X use AI to decide what content people like to  see and these systems often give priority to posts that get more attention. Unfortunately, this means that shocking, emotional, and often false posts spread faster than the effective and reliable ones. AI also makes it easy to generate realistic fake images and voices. A single fake voice recording of a politician or a manipulated photo of an attack can create panic in seconds. The impact of such AI-generated lies goes beyond individuals and reaches the level of international politics. After the 2025 Pahalgam attack in Kashmir, false videos and AI-generated posts flooded social media, increasing mistrust and worsening tensions between India and Pakistan. These examples show that AI is now a powerful tool in modern disinformation campaigns that influences both national politics and international relations. As UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned:“Our world is facing a pandemic of misinformation. It is spreading faster and further than the virus itself.”

CAN AI BE HELPFUL?

Many experts believe that AI can also help in fighting disinformation rather than only spreading it. For example, the same technology that creates deepfakes can also be used to detect them. Large companies like Google and Microsoft are now developing AI tools that identify manipulated videos, voices  and articles. AI can also speed up fact-checking by scanning thousands of sources which allow journalists and researchers to deny stories that are irrelevant and false.AI is also used in education to train people on how to spot false content. In addition, not all AI-generated content is dangerous. Many people use AI for harmless things like creating artwork, writing stories, or making funny videos and memes. As Albert Einstein once said, “The danger is not the machines themselves, but the people who control them.” This reminds us that the real issue is not the tool itself but how it is used.

Despite these positive uses the harmful effects cannot be ignored. Disinformation created by AI is harder to detect, spreads faster than the truth, and can have real-world consequences such as political instability, mistrust between countries and even war and violence. The challenge is to find a balance between using AI for progress and controlling its misuse. To do this ,governments, social media companies, and citizens all  need to work together. Governments should introduce laws and international agreements to prevent AI from being used in information warfare. Social media platforms must take responsibility by labeling AI-generated content and quickly removing false stories. At the same time, citizens should be educated about digital literacy so they learn to question and verify information instead of believing everything they see online.

TURNING AI INTO A SOLUTION:

It is true that AI has given rise to powerful tools of disinformation but it  is also important to recognize that the  technology itself is not the enemy. The same AI that produces fake news can be trained to detect it. Instead of fearing AI we  can invest in  fact-checking systems and transparent regulations. Schools and universities can teach young people how to question sources and identify manipulation  while governments can cooperate internationally to stop the weaponization of AI during conflicts. Social media companies can also redesign their algorithms to promote verified content rather than sensational falsehoods. An encouraging example is The Factual Analysis that work actively to fact-check misleading claims and expose AI-generated falsehoods. It works to slow down the spread of fabricated stories and provide people with verified information.Initiatives like Soch Fact-Check are also playing an important role by debunking viral rumors on politics, health and international affairs. During election periods, their fact-checking has  helped prevent fake videos and manipulated news from shaping public opinion and creating confusion. These examples prove that when guided properly,AI and fact-checking efforts do not only fight lies but also protect truth in societies. In this way ,AI will not  remain a danger it will become part of the solution.

CONCLUSION:

AI is one of the most powerful inventions of our time and it is clear that it has both good and bad sides. It can make life easier, but it can also create serious issues when misused. One of the biggest dangers is its role in spreading disinformation. Deepfakes, fake articles, manipulated images and videos and fake news have made lies more believable and harder to detect. This is dangerous for societies and for international community because it can foster mistrust, violence, and political instability. At the same time it can also be part of the solution if used carefully. The real problem lies not in the technology itself but in how humans choose to use it.

The future of AI depends on the choices we make today. If used responsibly and carefully AI can help promote truth and support democracy. If misused it can destroy trust, divide societies, and weaken peace between nations. In the end the choice is ours, whether we use it to spread lies and fear or to build trust and promote truth.AI can either be a weapon of disinformation or a shield against it. What matters most is how we as a global society decide to use it.
