Introduction
Disinformation in its eternity refers to the false spread of factual data. This article will examine how disinformation is becoming a reason for igniting extremist activities in Pakistan. From the recent years, disinformation has been catalyzed as a mainstay for disseminating extremist ideologies and instigating terrorist activities in Pakistan. Media manipulation and propaganda against active government, stake-holders, and security forces are the potent tools for the terrorist organizations to indoctrinate young minds. The growing armed race and revolutionary changes along with the media warfare as a strong digital weapon, is strengthening the roots of these terrorist organizations more than ever.
How disinformation is promoting terrorism?
The terrorist organizations such as Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), Baloch Liberation Army (BLF), Jaish-e-Muhammad (Jem), etc, are back funded by the rivals of Pakistan, such as India, Afghan Taliban, etc. The key purpose of these investments and funding is to target the mindset of youth and recruiting new members in their groups, which eventually lead towards civil war and the rise of extremist groups within the country, which internally weakens the country.
The concept of "Divide & Rule" is a well-documented phenomenon in history books, and we have observed its application throughout the ages, as a means to reinforce power and erode the central government and the security forces. The same strategy is being used by the terrorist organizations. The key objective of using disinformation is to brainwash the mindset of the weak, illiterate people of the country. They also exploit existing sectarian tensions to fulfill their own agendas. By creating deep divisions in the name of religion & ethnicity, it becomes easier to create an environment conducive to violence and terrorism. Eventually, it leads towards polarization and radicalization, which inclines certain individuals predisposed to extremist ideologies.
In the context of proxy warfare, the former US President Dwight D. Eisenhower mentioned,
"Politics is not a product, but a process. To make it work, you have to have the right people in the right places, & they have to be willing to work together".
For example, India is currently running its proxies in Pakistan through RAW, whilst maintaining a link with the insurgent groups and supporting them. In Pakistan, the illiteracy rate is around 60-62%. The harsh realities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, encompassing limited access to resources and opportunities, pave the way for manipulation. The lack of accurate information makes it easy for the false narratives to take hold.
"Terrorism and Extremism are the symptoms of a deeper malaise, rooted in socio-economic disparities, political instability, & ideological distortions".
Exposing TTP's Digital Tactics:
A 17-page document was released by TTP in Nov, 2024, illustrating the "Islamic Method" for eliminating enemies, circulated via the internet archive. This clearly shows the expertise of TTP in using digital platforms for broadcasting their beliefs and ideologies. Their access to encrypted tools makes sure that their content remains undetected by Pakistani authorities and reaches a high level of audience. The actual target of this content is the isolated youth, especially the people from the Pashtun Belt & Muslim diaspora communities. The TTP portrays its struggle as a "Divine Jihad" against an Un-Islamic Pakistani state, considering the government as unjust, and the security forces as traitorous agents of Western Powers. Their content also contains combined videos of Quranic recitations with war imagery (suicide bombers etc), portraying martyrdom as their supreme achievement. This information warfare leads to social instability and fear among public, particularly among Pashtun communities.
The Detection of Indian Propaganda by EU`:
Some years back, the insurgent groups, such as TTP, ISK, Let, and JeM launched a venomous and lethal campaign against Pakistan in the name of "Info lab". These websites portrayed false information about Pakistan to defame it globally. In 2019, EU disinformation lab also exposed a network of fake websites, in which 265 fake media outlets were found to be operating against Pakistan. All of these 265 outlets had the same tactical approach of republishing content from reliable sources such as Interfax, Voice of America, BBC, KCNA etc. All those sites published anti-Pakistan content for targeting the reputation of Pakistan.
"This is a hugely shocking discovery and it has exposed the sinister Indian designs against the sacred country Pakistan. All the terrorists behind this sinister Indian network are the real filth of the earth and they will fail miserably in their nefarious designs and that's for sure".
The EU Disinformation Task Force also detected fake twitter accounts functioning against Pakistan as a part of the propaganda.
Conclusion:
The implementation of digital literacy programs, assistance to education in the remote areas, especially in KPK, Balochistan, and Sindh, is an imminent solution for a better future for Pakistan. The government should focus on the needs of these marginalized people, to keep the country united. The media regulation should be monitored for securing the country from the actions caused by the misinformation among the youth. Small steps will lead towards a bigger change. Addressing the needs and requirements of the people of diaspora communities and minorities is the best possible way for reducing these threats.
